March Cookie of the Month: Chocolate Caramel

March 19th is National Chocolate Caramel Day! A day that celebrates rich chocolate combined with sweet, creamy, gooey caramel is a day worth celebrating!  Many claim that the union of chocolate and caramel is the greatest creation of all time in the world of sweets! Most sweet lovers feel if you have chocolate, caramel will make it even more delicious!

People have been caramelizing sugars since the 17th century. Caramels came into existence when someone added cream to the caramelized sugar. Mrs. Lincoln’s cookbook from 1884, contains recipes for caramel flavored desserts.

When we think of Hershey we think of chocolate, but Milton Hershey began his career in preparing and selling caramel at a caramel company. Mr.Hershey was experimenting to improve the taste of  caramel candies in the 1800’s when he found some German-built machines for manufacturing chocolate. His attention shifted to making chocolate and that is when the blending of this great pair evolved! The combo became a sensation and we can thank Milton Hershey for its popularity. The chocolate covered caramel was Hersey’s first product!
