A number of countries claim to have birthed the snickerdoodle, but no one really knows for sure. It’s origins can be traced back to Germany, with the cookie’s endearing name derived from the German word "schneckennudeln” which means snail dumpling. A more appealing explanation is that the snickerdoodle has Dutch roots and its name is an abbreviation of “Saint Nicholas.”
These fun, sweet little cookies were popular in President James Buchanan’s native state of Pennsylvania for centuries. It is speculated that he had a soft spot for snickerdoodles.
Snickerdoodles have been called many names, including Cry Babies,Jumbles and Plunkets. In the early 1900’s, there was a folk hero named Snickerdoodle who was at the heart of many tall tales. Perhaps our beloved snickerdoodle was named after him!
